Institute for Gender Equality fact sheet

• The Allegheny County Bar Association Institute for Gender Equality was founded as a tool to aid in the enhancement of the presence of women in leadership positions in the Allegheny County legal community, the elimination of the gender wage gap, and the expansion of the avenues through which female attorneys can build successful careers. The Institute will offer collaborative and goal-oriented programs designed to address issues facing female attorneys.
• The formation of the Institute was one of the recommendations by the Allegheny County Bar Association Gender Equality Task Force, which was formed after a 2005 Membership Survey showed little or no improvement in gender equality when compared to a survey that was completed in 1990.
• The Institute’s inaugural session will begin in the third quarter of 2009. Classes will be held at the Allegheny County Bar Association’s conference facilities.
• Linda Varrenti Hernandez, Esquire, is the Director of the Institute.
• Instructors will be experts in diverse disciplines and come from several geographic areas.
• Participation in the Institute is open to any member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and students of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and the Duquesne University School of Law.
• Class size will be between 15 and 25 participants, although many seminars will be open to the entire membership of the bar association. Additional programs may be open to all ACBA members as well as members of other bar associations.
