The Allegheny County Bar Association Institute for Gender Equality

  • The Allegheny County Bar Association Institute for Gender Equality
has been founded to enhance the presence of women in leadership positions in the Allegheny County legal community, eliminate the gender wage gap, and to expand the avenues through which female attorneys can build successful careers. The Institute will offer collaborative and goal oriented programs designed to address issues facing female attorneys.
  • The formation of the Institute was one of the recommendations by the Allegheny County Bar Association’s Gender Equality Task Force, which was formed after a 2005 Membership Survey showed little or no improvement in gender equality.
  • The Institute’s inaugural session will begin in the first quarter of 2009. Classes will be held at the Allegheny County Bar Association’s conference facilities.
  • Linda Varrenti Hernandez, Esquire, will be the Director of the Institute.
  • The curriculum will include seminars that will fall under the following educational tracks: Leadership and Management, Business Development, Negotiation Skills, Communication Skills, and Work and Career Balance.
  • Instructors will be drawn from many venues.
  • Participation in the Institute is open to any member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and students of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and the Duquesne University School of Law.
  • Class size will be between 15 and 25 participants, although many seminars will be open to the entire membership of the bar association.
  • It is envisioned that The Institute will be operated under the Allegheny County Bar Foundation with financial support from the Allegheny County Bar Association.
