Volunteer appreciation breakfast--last chance to register!

The Public Service Committee will thank and recognize volunteers who provided pro bono services to low-income clients in the past year through Pro Bono Center member organizations and ACBA/ACBF projects. This event is FREE to Pro Bono Center volunteers.

Wednesday, May 13, 2009
8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
The Rivers Club
One Oxford Centre
301 Grant Street
Pittsburgh, PA 15219

A buffet breakfast and brief opening remarks will be followed by a one-hour CLE program on issues related to the representation of low-income clients. Come learn about new pro bono programs, trends, and best practices in areas of poverty law. Along with Pro Bono Coordinator Barbara Griffin, panelists will include Judge Alan Hertzberg of the Family Court of the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas and attorney Cathy Martin of Neighborhood Legal Services Association, who will be available to answer your questions. Join your fellow volunteers in celebration of your commitment to helping low-income residents of Allegheny County.

Click here or go to www.acba.org to register on-line for the breakfast. (Go to "Online event registration" then scroll down to "Programs, Trends and Best Practices in Pro Bono Representation 09" and register as a "volunteer.") You may also obtain a registration form by contacting Danielle Foster at dfoster@acba.org.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Volunteer opportunities and deferred associates sought

The Pro Bono Center has received a number of inquiries regarding volunteer opportunities in the legal profession for this summer. Many law students and college students without paid employment for the summer are interested in volunteering for public interest organizations, legal service providers, and law firms as a way to gain experience. If you have need of help this summer, please us know so that we may direct inquiries your way.

Similarly, some legal services organizations are interested in hosting associates whose starting dates at law firms have been deferred. Several national programs are currently matching deferred associates with public interest organizations, but some inquiries have also come to the Pro Bono Center. If you are an employer who is seeking to place a deferred associate, please contact the Pro Bono Center if you are interested in knowing about local organizations that could use help.

Golf tournament and raffle to benefit legal services

The 17th Annual ACBA Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, July 27, 2009 at Treesdale Golf & Country Club. Proceeds benefit the Allegheny County Bar Foundation's Pro Bono Center and Neighborhood Legal Services Association which provide pro bono legal services to low-income residents in our community.

Once again, there will be exciting games, raffles, and prizes at the tournament, including the Golf Scotland raffle which offers a chance to win an exclusive golf trip for two to St. Andrews in Scotland or an alternative $5,000 cash option. For more information on this exciting raffle, click here.

Register before May 31 and receive an Early Bird rate!

Legal services directory now available

A directory of legal service providers in Allegheny County is now available from the Pro Bono Center. Programs and organizations are listed both alphabetically and by subject matter. We hope that you will find it useful for referring low-income clients to the appropriate service providers. Click here to view and print out the directory. Hard copies are available upon request to bgriffin@acba.org. Copies will be distributed at the volunteer appreciation breakfast, May 13.

Inspired by a comprehensive listing of legal and social services compiled by volunteer Judy Zernich for the "Ask the Attorney" program at North Hills Community Outreach, this directory focuses on projects and organizations providing legal advice or representation. Members of the pro bono committee of the Pittsburgh Paralegal Association were responsible for much of the drafting, formatting, and editing of the directory. Many thanks!
