Allegheny County Bar Association Executive Director David A. Blaner Elected President of the National Association of Bar Executives
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – August 9, 2013. Officers of the Allegheny County Bar Association today announced that its Executive Director, David A. Blaner, was elected to serve as president of the National Association of Bar Executives (NABE). Blaner was passed the president’s gavel at a ceremony yesterday at the NABE national convention in San Francisco. He officially began his duties on July 1.
According to Nancy L. Heilman, president of the Allegheny County Bar Association, NABE members will now see the same forward-thinking leadership that our bar association members have witnessed for the 22 years that Blaner has been either executive director or assistant executive director. “David has helped make the Allegheny County Bar Association nationally recognized due to his out-of-the-box thinking and innovative strategic development of legal education programs and services,” said Heilman. “We are honored to share David's knowledge and talents this year with the hundreds of NABE members nationwide as he helps guide that organization to the next level of success."
Blaner has been an active member of NABE for more than 22 years and has served on a variety of committees and held several positions on the board. He most recently served as president-elect this past year.
“I am honored to have been elected NABE president,” said Blaner. “It is such an excellent and worthwhile organization that has helped bar associations across the country develop legal education and legal assistance programs that serve hundreds of thousands of individuals each year. I look forward to working with NABE members on continuing to build on these programs.”
Blaner has already organized a task force to study the changing legal education environment and how law schools, law firms, legal organizations, and bar associations can work together to ensure that law students continue to be ready to smoothly transition into the working world through both in school and practical work experience.
Blaner has been the executive director of the Allegheny County Bar Association and the Allegheny County Bar Foundation for the past 12 years. Before becoming executive director of both organizations, he served as assistant executive director for nine years and one year as acting executive director.
Blaner previously worked as a city manager for three suburban municipalities in the Pittsburgh area. He is a Past Chair of the ABA Metro Bar Caucus. His involvement with NABE include the following positions; President-Elect, Chair of the NABE Administration & Finance Section, Chair of the NABE Chief Staff Executive Committee, Chair of the Sponsorship Committee, and Chair of the Program Committee. He is the Past Chair and Past Treasurer of the Great Lakes Organization of Bar Executives. He is the Immediate Past President of the Pennsylvania Bar Executives Association. Dave also serves on the Board of the Neighborhood Legal Services Association in Pittsburgh.
Blaner is a 1981 graduate of Bethany College, Bethany, West Virginia, with a BA degree in Political Science. He earned his Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1982. David is a graduate of Leadership Pittsburgh year XI.
Chartered in 1870 and headquartered in downtown Pittsburgh, the Allegheny County Bar Association is a professional organization with more than 6,300 member attorneys, judges, district justices, legal administrators, and paralegals.
