Allegheny County Bar Association/Foundation to send 1,500 Students to School With New Backpacks
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – August 16, 2012. Officers of the Allegheny County Bar Association and the Allegheny County Bar Foundation today announced that the Backpack Project will provide new backpacks to 1,500 Allegheny County students. This is the seventh year of the project, which is coordinated by the Allegheny County Bar Foundation and the Allegheny County Bar Association Public Service Committee. Attorney and community volunteers assisted in packing the backpacks with binders, notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters, crayons, rulers, erasers and other necessary items.
This year, more than 30 corporate sponsors will help fund the project. Bulldog Office Products, Education Management Corporation (EDMC), and Office Depot are major sponsors. The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank has been unparalleled in their assistance with this project, transporting and arranging for distribution of the backpacks at their various locations on August 11 and August 18, with the help of additional bar association volunteers.
“Our attorneys have long been committed to serving our area schools through legal education and public service programs, and the Backpack Project is one of the most rewarding programs that we coordinate,” said Mark T. Vuono, President of the Allegheny County Bar Association. “Thanks to the generosity of our corporate sponsors and the many hours of planning by members of our Public Service Committee, we can help more than 1,500 area students go back to school with the necessary supplies to further their education.”
Angel L. Revelant, Esquire of Pollock Begg Komar Glasser Vertz, LLC, co-chair of the project along with Neil Gregorio, Esquire (Tucker Arensberg) and Jill Beck, Esquire (Pennsylvania Superior Court), said the Backpack Project would only be possible with the help of so many generous individuals, law firms, and local businesses. “There is no way we could have provided 1,500 students with backpacks filled with school supplies if our many sponsors had not stepped forward to help fund the project and if our many volunteers had not donated their time. We cannot thank them enough.”
In addition to those listed above, this year’s sponsors included the Allegheny County Bar Association and its Young Lawyers Division; Allegheny County Bar Foundation; George Jackson Promotions; Tucker Arensberg; Pollock Begg Komar Glasser Vertz, LLC; Westinghouse; Bayer; Target; Deborah Kutzavitch; The Hillman Company; Horovitz, Rudoy & Roteman, LLC; Pittsburgh Reporting Service; McCarthy, McDonald, Schulberg & Joy; Precise, Inc.; Romualdi, Davidson & Associates; Wilder Mahood McKinley & Oglesby; Frank Gail Bails Murcko & Pocrass, P.C.; Stonemetz & Wilkins; Robert O. Lampl; Fox Rothschild, LLC; bit-x-bit, LLC; Burns White employees; Megan Ott; USI Affinity; Alro Steel Foundation; Gentile, Horoho & Avalli; and Ernst & Young.
Chartered in 1870 and headquartered in downtown Pittsburgh, The Allegheny County Bar Association is a professional organization with more than 6,600 member attorneys, judges, district justices, legal administrators, and paralegals.
