Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – June 24, 2008. Officers of the Allegheny County Bar Association today released the results of the association's 2008 Judicial Survey. The survey, conducted every four years, provides the opportunity for attorneys who are practicing in Allegheny County to evaluate the judges in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, the United States District Court for the Western District of PA, and U.S. Bankruptcy Courts, as well as U.S. Magistrate judges and Workers' Compensation judges. This is the first time that the Workers' Compensation judges have been part of the survey. The survey results can be found on the association's website at www.acba.org in a PDF format.
The survey asks respondents to rate judges in the following areas: impartiality, legal ability, diligence, and judicial temperament.
According to Ken Gormley, president of the bar association, "our association bylaws require us to conduct this survey every four years, and our attorneys who represent clients in cases before these judges are in an excellent position to provide a first-hand evaluation."
"What the survey reveals is that we have outstanding, fair judges in Allegheny County with years of legal experience. We are all committed to continuing to provide feedback to our judges, as is being accomplished through this survey."
Each judge is provided a copy of the survey results. This year, approximately 1,000 attorneys who try cases/represent clients in the courts responded to the survey.
"The survey does not compare the performance of judges in any way. Rather, our attorneys only evaluated the judges whom they have appeared before during court proceedings. That is what our bylaws require, and we believe it amounts to useful feedback for our judges in Allegheny County who strive for ongoing excellence," Gormley added.
Chartered in 1870 and headquartered in downtown Pittsburgh, The Allegheny County Bar Association is a professional organization with more than 6,500 member attorneys, judges, magisterial district judges, legal administrators, and paralegals.
