Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – August 20, 2010. Officers of the Allegheny County Bar Association today announced that the association’s Backpack Program will provide new backpacks to 1,000 Allegheny County students. The backpacks will be filled with school supplies, including notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters and other necessary items. This year, Storehouse For Teachers, a non-profit organization that provides teachers with free classroom supplies, will assist with the distribution of the backpacks to needy students. The Backpack Program, which is in its fourth year of operation, will hand out a record number of backpacks, up from 700 last year.
On August 24, 2010 at noon on the ninth floor at the City-County Building, volunteers will prepare the backpacks and supplies for delivery. The media is invited to attend.
“Our attorneys along with our generous business partners have pleasantly surprised us again this year by allowing us to help more than 1,000 area students go back to school with the necessary supplies to further their education,” said Gary Hunt, president of the Allegheny County Bar Association. “We cannot thank them enough for their generosity and wish all of our areas students the best year.”
Attorney Jonathan McAnney, who coordinated this year’s program, said the individuals, law firms, and other businesses that helped make this year’s project so successful share the bar association’s commitment to the community. “We just have to ask for volunteers and donations. Every single organization which we asked wanted to do as much as possible to help students and families. With school districts facing budget shortages more than ever this year, families are being asked to have their children ready to hit the ground running when school starts. These backpacks will help in that effort.”
