Elizabeth Hughes
Elizabeth L. Hughes, Senior Associate Counsel at UPMC, is Immediate-Past President of the Allegheny County Bar Association.
In her role at UPMC, Ms. Hughes is part of the Corporate Legal Department’s Health Services Group and is responsible for providing legal support and direction to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, UPMC Mercy, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital and UPMC Children’s Community Pediatrics. Prior to joining UPMC, Ms. Hughes was an associate at Raphael, Ramsden and Behers, P.C. practicing in the areas of family law, guardianships and mental health law. Ms. Hughes previously worked as an Assistant Solicitor for Allegheny County, representing the Office of Behavioral Health and the Office of Intellectual Disabilities. Ms. Hughes also spent several years as an adjunct professor at Duquesne University School of Law, providing clinical instruction to students in the Civil and Family Justice Clinic.
Ms. Hughes is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where she was President of her class and student commencement speaker. Upon graduation, Ms. Hughes clerked for the Hon. Justin M. Johnson of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Hughes spent several years in Phoenix, where she supervised the City of Phoenix’s youth violence prevention program, Project BRAVE, which facilitated programming to children and teens in over 70 sites. Ms. Hughes is a proud Pittsburgh native and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Clarion University, where she was a State Board of Governors Scholar.
Ms. Hughes is a past chair of the ACBA Bench-Bar Committee, the Homer S. Brown Division and the ACBA Nominating Committee. She is a member of the ACBA Finance Committee and served two-terms on the ACBA Board of Governors from 2012 to 2018. Ms. Hughes additionally served as the Family Law Section Membership Committee Co-Chair. She was appointed to the Bench-Bar Ad Hoc Committee and served as co-chair of the ACBA Professional Conduct Ad Hoc Committee. Ms. Hughes is a past member of the ACBA Judiciary Committee and is an Allegheny County Bar Foundation Fellow.
In addition to her bar association activities, Ms. Hughes is the current President of the University of Pittsburgh Law Alumni Association, previously served on the board of Neighborhood Legal Services and is a senior hearing committee member for District IV of the Pennsylvania Disciplinary Board. She is a volunteer with the Allegheny County Family Division Pro Se Legal Clinic and a proud Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
