In-Person CLE – Guardianships: Serving as Court Appointed Counsel

Guardianships: Serving as Court Appointed Counsel

Serving as court-appointed counsel in guardianship cases is essential to ensuring that an alleged incapacitated person's legal rights are represented and due process is served. At this session, practitioners who serve as court-appointed counsel will cover a variety of topics, including:

  • How to apply to be court appointed counsel
  • Responsibilities of court-appointed counsel
  • Scope and duration of representation
  • Getting paid
  • Recent updates to guardianship law

Guardianship Department Supervisor, Trevor Fleming, will discuss common missteps made by practitioners and provide guidance for court-appointed counsel dealing with challenging clients and/or cases. Introductory remarks will be given by the Hon. Hugh McGough.

Pizza will be served.

*This program is only being offered live in-person at the Koppers Building.

*This program has been approved for 1.5 hour of Substantive CLE credit and also qualifies for 1.8 hours of credit under the West Virginia Rules for Mandatory Continuing Legal Education.

**Most CLE programs may be submitted for Ohio CLE credit upon request for an additional $25 fee. For more information or to request Ohio credit, please email hbedford@acba.org.

*Please note: The Pa. CLE Board can take up to 45 days to post credits.

CLE and Events Registration Policy: Members and Non-members can register for ACBA programs online or by paper mail-in registration, up to two days prior to a program start date. Seating is limited, so pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Walk-ins will be accommodated as space permits. To secure your spot, payment must be made in advance due to limited registration capacity. You can do so online via credit card or by mailing in a check. If this ACBA CLE cannot be held in-person, it will be converted into a webinar and held on the same date and time. You will be notified via email if that change is made.

Printed materials are available for an additional fee upon request.

Credit has been approved with the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board for 1.50 Substantive credits.

Credit has been approved with the West Virginia State Bar MCLE for 1.80 General credits.

Policies and Notices

If cancelling your registration, you must notify the Allegheny County Bar Association by email CLEcancel@acba.org no later than 2 business days prior to the CLE course presentation date in order to receive a 100% refund; 1 business day or less, you will receive a full refund minus a $25 administrative fee.

The Allegheny County Bar Association welcomes the transferring of a CLE registration to a substitute course date and time. If you do not attend the CLE course and did not notify Allegheny County Bar Association in the appropriate advanced notice, you waive eligibility for a refund.  Also, cancellation received after the day of the program will not be refunded.

The Allegheny County Bar Association reserves the right to modify or cancel a program if circumstances warrant. If the ACBA cancels a program, the cost of that program will be refunded.
