Summary

This program commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Pennsylvania Provincial Conference, held in June 1776 at Carpenters’ Hall. The program examines the Conference’s lasting legal significance, with particular emphasis on the Pennsylvania Constitution of 1776.

This innovative charter introduced a Declaration of Rights predating the federal Bill of Rights and expanded democratic participation by eliminating property ownership requirements for voting. It also helped shape constitutional development in Pennsylvania and influenced broader American legal principles. Panelists discuss key constitutional rights affecting everyday life, including the fundamental right to vote, the mandate to provide a “thorough and efficient” system of public education, and the Environmental Rights Amendment guaranteeing clean air and water. Additional topics may include reproductive autonomy, economic liberty, and proposed constitutional amendments, highlighting the Constitution’s continuing relevance to Pennsylvanians today.
