Purpose:

The Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee provides a forum for ACBA members interested in or practicing in the field of alternative dispute resolution (ADR), either as a neutral or advocate. The Committee provides a networking forum that explores trends, significant court decisions, local, state and national developments, proposed legislation, research studies and other ADR-related matters of general interest, and shares practice tips, as well as business development and skill-building opportunities. Meetings are held at noon, September through June, on the first Wednesday of the month in the Koppers Building. Programming includes discussions of ADR techniques such as negotiation, mediation, fact-finding, arbitration, early neutral evaluation, mini-trials, judicial conciliation and private judging.

Members of the Committee are active at the local and state level to help encourage wider adoption of ADR-friendly legislation, write articles on various ADR topics for the Lawyer’s Journal, and guest lecture to law students on career opportunities in the field. The Committee also sponsors the annual Kaplan Lecture which provides a forum for lawyers, academics, professional neutrals, members of the judiciary, community dispute resolution organizations, and interested members of the public to hear nationally-known ADR experts talk about cutting-edge developments in the field.
