Buying a New Computer: Should You Take Additional Security Steps?

For many years, purchasing a new computer also meant one had to decide which third-party antivirus or cybersecurity software to ‘add on’ to the transaction. Most of today’s computers, however, have numerous built-in security features, designed to ferret out viruses and other malware. Indeed, the most common threat vector in today’s environment remains the device’s user, as cyberattacks are commonly triggered by phishing attacks designed to trick the recipient into clicking dangerous links. Still, additional security steps are certainly worth considering:

• Password managers: This is a secure “vault” that protects, stores and then autofills your various passwords, meaning that you only have to remember one master password.
• Virtual Private Network: Consider a “VPN” that will encrypt your internet connection.
• Additional Security Software: Packages can go above and beyond what your built-in system already provides.
