Got Backup? Protect Yourself at Home and at Work

Effective backup is a critical part of cybersecurity for attorneys, at work and at home, to help to recover from data lost from incidents like accidental deletion, hardware failure, data corruption, lost or stolen hardware and malware attacks. Important data should be backed up whether it’s on servers, desktops, laptops, smartphones, tablets or portable media.

It should be based on a backup and recovery plan that includes testing to make sure it works. Considerations include what to back up, how frequently and the backup method. It can range from just important data to a full backup of the operating system, software and all data. Frequency can range from continuous to daily or weekly. (Continuous backup, without other periodic backup, presents a risk of compromise of the backup set if the original data is corrupted or compromised by malware.) Cloud backup services are available to automatically perform backups at set intervals.

A common strategy is “3-2-1.” Backup at least three copies of data, on at least two kinds of storage media, with at least one copy offsite.
