Planning a Spring Break Trip? Don’t Forget to Pack Your Cybersecurity Best Practices
As we head into travel season, travelers would be wise to think about some simple things that can be done to protect your information and devices from cyber threats. While no measures are full proof, basic steps can mitigate the risk:
- Mobile Devices: Bring only those devices that are necessary and ensure that they are all running on the latest operating system. Also, ensure that screen lock is enabled, to guard against prying eyes or in case the device falls into the wrong hands. Before you depart for your trip, ensure that the devices are backed up, and that you have enabled device tracking.
- Wi-Fi: If at all feasible, avoid public Wi-Fi networks. If a personal hotspot is an option, utilize that instead. If not use virtual private network (VPN) software to connect to public Wi-Fi if possible.
- Social Media: Avoid oversharing the details of your trip, and never post pictures of boarding passes, passports or the like.
