Protect Yourself Against Messaging Attacks

Smishing is an evil twin of phishing that uses SMS text messaging or other messaging apps or services instead of email. Like phishing, it has a malicious purpose like installing malware, stealing money, and obtaining information such as login credentials, bank account information, personal information, and confidential business information.

Here are some steps to guard against it:

  • The first step is to understand that it’s a risk and keep it in mind every time you use a messaging app or service.
  • Think before you click (or provide sensitive information).
  • Be alert for unexpected requests and ones that convey a sense of urgency.
  • Verify requests through a different communications channel (not a text).
