Scareware: Don’t Be Tricked By Fear

A common tactic among cybercriminals is to use a pop-up message on the user’s computer screen, warning that the device is infected with ransomware or malware, and then directing the user to call the number on the screen to fix the problem.

The pop-up usually follows once the user clicks on a link that leads him to a site that looks to be, but is not, legitimate. Once that number is called, additional scare tactics are used to trick the user into divulging personal, financial or other sensitive information. In some cases, bank accounts and retirement assets have been drained, all due fear. How can you avoid this?

• Always be suspicious. Calls to action and urgent requests should be scrutinized.
• No legitimate company will ask for your password or to transfer funds “immediately.”
• Never use contact information in a pop up alter; check first with known contact sources, such as your bank statement.
