Be On Guard for Phone and Text Message Scams

Like email phishing, attackers are now using “vishing” (voice phishing) and “smishing” (SMS text phishing) to steal money, information and logon credentials. Attackers can use deepfakes to impersonate known voices and spoofing of phone numbers to make it appear that calls and texts are from legitimate or known numbers.

The Center for Internet Security recommends the following to protect against vishing and smishing:

  • Pause and think before acting
  • Do not answer calls or respond to texts from unknown numbers
  • Keep your personal information private
  • Verify the source
  • Enable strong security on your accounts
