Times of Tragedy and Crisis: Don’t Fall Victim to Cyber Criminals
For more than two years, the world has been faced with historic crisis events: pandemics, destructive weather events, and wars, to name just a few. Unfortunately, cyber criminals prey on these uncertain times by creating a heightened sense of urgency to trick people into donating to fraudulent causes. Keep the following “do’s and don’ts” in mind:
- DO: Be very suspicious of any requirement to donate via wire, gift card or cryptocurrency.
- DO: Conduct additional online research about the entity if you are contacted with an urgent plea for help.
- DON’T: Don’t assume please from crowdfunding sites (GoFundMe, TikTok) are legitimate in the wake of a tragedy.
- DON’T: Don’t provide personal or financial information when responding to an unsolicited request.
