Vacation Season: Travel Safely
School is out, which means long summer evenings, outdoor activities and, for many people, an annual sojourn to the beach or some other vacation spot. When traveling, most people still want to remain connected to the digital world, and therefore bring along mobile devices and computers. Traveling with connected devices is not without risk. So what can you do to ensure a secure vacation season?
- Pack Lightly: Only bring mobile devices that you truly need. The more devices you bring, the higher risk of loss theft or intrusion.
- Update your operating systems: Ensure that any devices with online access have the most current software updates.
- Enable Remote Wiping: If available, enable remote-wiping capabilities, in case a device is lost or stolen.
- Use Personal Hotspots: Avoid public wifi networks; if possible, use hotspots generated from your devices.
- Avoid Public Computers: Avoid these at all costs (often available in hotel lobbies or coffee shops).
