The May 2 edition of Pittsburgh Legal Journal Opinions is available online. The Pittsburgh Legal Journal publishes timely, precedent-setting, full-text opinions from various divisions of the Court of Common Pleas. Opinions that appeared in past editions are available in a searchable database here; members must be logged in to the ACBA website to access this database.

ACBA members and their families are invited to join the ACBA Community Service Committee for the group’s ‘Spring Cleaning’ event on Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The ACBA is partnering with Allegheny CleanWays for a morning of collecting litter and beautification. The group will meet at a park in Bloomfield, clean up litter there, then branch out further into the neighborhood. Note that participation will involving walking and cleaning up litter. Gloves and grabbers will be provided, as well as hats, donuts and refreshments.

The ACBA Soccer League kicks off its spring season this Sunday, May 11, and there’s still time to join the action. The league will have a kickoff happy hour at Cork Harbour in Lawrenceville on Thursday, May 15 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Come network and mingle with other teams before competing for the ACBA Trophy.

The league is accepting new players and is a gender-inclusive space for all lawyers, law clerks and law students of all skill levels to play and to network with members of the community. Games are played Sunday mornings at Winchester Thurston in Shadyside from Sunday, May 11 through Sunday, July 13. Please contact Commissioner Josh Sallmen at jsallmen3@gmail.com with interest in registering as a free agent or registering a team.

Attorneys can earn up to eight CLE credits at the ACBA Bench-Bar Conference, and judges can earn up to six CJE credits. From civil litigation to criminal to Orphans’ Court, the programs cover a wide gamut of practice areas; for detailed descriptions, click below. Bench-Bar will be held June 12-14 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort and have a ‘60s theme. The conference features three days of networking, fine dining, social activities, sporting events and more.

ACBA Members are encouraged to participate in the annual elections, which open at 12 a.m. on Monday, May 19, and close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4.

Eligible members can cast ballots to elect the association’s next President-Elect, Secretary, division leaders, and new members of both the Board of Governors and the Judiciary Committee. This year, the ACBA elections will run concurrently with the retention referendum that occurs every two years; ACBA members are asked to vote as to whether or not judges should be retained in their positions. Members in the active and honorary membership classes as of April 1, 2025, are eligible to vote.

As in recent years, voting will be conducted exclusively online. On May 19, eligible members will receive an email containing instructions and unique login credentials. To prevent delivery issues, members are advised to add noreply@directvote.net to their safe sender list or consult with their IT departments to do so. Members who do not receive the voting email by May 20 should reach out to Jennifer Pulice at jpulice@acba.org.

In the below video, ACBA President Regina Wilson recaps the May 6 Board of Governors Meeting. She covers the approval of a request from the Family Law Section regarding Pa. House Bill 350. Additionally, the board approved certain recommendations from the ACBA By-Laws Committee regarding by-law amendments, and a recommendation from the Finance Committee regarding co-partnering with charitable organizations.
