After long term notices to users, Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 on Oct. 14. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide software updates, features updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.
Microsoft offers the following options:
- Install Windows 11 on your current PC (if it meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11 and is eligible for an upgrade)
- Get a new PC with Windows 11
- Subscribe to Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.
ESU will cost $61 per device for one year for enterprise customers and $30 for home users. It is free for home users who enable Windows Backup to sync their data to OneDrive (requires an account) or for 1,000 Microsoft Rewards Points.
While PCs with Windows 10 will continue to work after Oct. 14, continued use after this date without security updates presents a high risk. They will be exposed to security vulnerabilities that are known to attackers. This is a concern for attorneys because of their ethical and legal duties to take reasonable measures to safeguard information relating to clients and other confidential information.
